Dylan,
Today was your first birthday. We made it. We actually both overslept and it was awesome. I hope you didn't get in trouble at day care.

In case you don't remember we went to Charlotte to visit mommy for lunch. We ate pizza at Brixx. You had cheese pizza and apples. We also went to see mommy's office on the 29th floor of the Hearst building where you can see for miles and miles (including the hospital you were born in). She works high up which means that she should be making lots and lots of money soon. We had a good time visiting with all her co-workers and checking out her awesome cubicle. It's neater than our bedroom.

Tonight we opened lots of presents and ate cake in honor of your birthday. You got a lot of stuff in the mail from relatives and strangers. Some of them even look like bills. But some of them looked like stuff from Aunt Tracy and the gang in Texas.

Aunt Linda even sent you a bunch of small bunt cakes from Portland. They were awesome and you almost ate a whole one by yourself. Thanks Aunt Linda!

Afterwards I read you this awesome book called Birthday Monsters. It was super scary and talked about all kinds of freaky stuff like Sonny Bono's eyeliner and how small George W. Bush's brain really is.

You know it's been a long year for us. Mommy and I have started to age quicker and we aren't able to sleep past 7am anymore. We no longer have any friends and our week nights are consumed with making bottles and washing clothes. We're not sure when this all changed but we think its all your fault.
I started on this really sappy blog about how much you have changed our life but then I figured that you probably don't want to hear that crap. Then I remember a blog I wrote almost a month before you were born about my expectations of what life would be like after you arrived.
At the time I had no idea if you were a boy or a girl. I also didn't know what you would look like or how much gas you would have. I just want to touch on a few off those expectations to see how close I was.
Expectation #1) Lots of crying - I was wrong about this. You really don't cry much at all. You're pretty tough, even when the dogs run by you at 200mph and knock you into the wall. You just laugh.
Expectation #2) Sleepless nights - We still aren't sure why but you have been sleeping through the night since you were 10 weeks old. We got a good one for sure. If you could work on sleeping in past 6:30am that would be really nice.
Expectation #3) Dirty diapers - Yep, totally! Something we couldn't avoid but we're managing. Any time you are ready to start helping out with that we're all for it.
Expectation #6) Personality - Unbelievably sweet, funny, cute, adorable, smart, witty, caring and of course lovable as they get.
Expectation #8) Fort building - we haven't done too much of this year but I imagine those will begin before long. I've already started figuring out all the possible ways to reconstruct the living room.
Expectation #9) Christmas morning - my expectation was that we'd have to get up really early this year but you slept in until around 9am I think. It was really nice. Let's try that again next year okay?
Expectation #10) Niki being normal again - it didn't happen. Your mom is still pretty weird and I still get yelled at for not reading my horoscope.
On a super-sappy note, the way you have changed our life is really indescribable. In hindsight, life was pretty boring before you came along. The past year has been the best year ever and I imagine they will only get better from here on out. We wish you a very special first birthday and many more to come.
We love you birthday girl!
