Power Outage

Yesterday we had a really bad storm. Getting some rain was awesome but we could have done without all power outages. Not to mention all those people that freak out when a storm comes.

It all started about 3pm yesterday. The wind and rain was coming down really hard. I was scared and went and sat in a closet under the stairs. It was safe and dry in there and I found some old cookies from the last time we had a storm and they weren't too bad. Some milk would have been nice.

Niki called around 4pm and asked if I could pickup Dylan at day care. She said she had to work a little later, but I know she was really just writing blogs and leaving comments on Humzoo. Being the awesome husband I am I told her that I'd be happy to pick Dylan up.

Soon after that the power went out. I was sitting in the dark in my office with the glow of the computer only to light my way out. I assumed it would be a brief outage. We haven't had many long ones since we moved to this house so why would it be any different. I sat around in the dark for a little while and tried to read a magazine but it was too dark. I eventually found a flashlight in the garage and got through half of an article. Then I realized it was time to go get Dylan.

I went out to get in the car and realized that I couldn't get out because the garage door opener runs on electricity. Being the super dad that I am I wasn't going to let this stop me. I figured I could just pull the quick-release string on the garage door opener and open it manually. No go. It was stuck. Totally busted.

I went over to see if Niki's garage door was the same way but of course hers worked just fine. So I came up with this awesome idea to try to "inch" the car over to her garage bay by backing up and pulling forward about a million times. About a minute into it I was consuming way too much carbon-monoxide and getting nowhere so I aborted that plan all together.

I called Niki several times to see if she could leave early since I couldn't get out. She wasn't answering her phone so my only choice was to disassemble the garage door. I had to pop a few pins out and remove the arm that connects the door to the opener. Soon after I was on my way to day care!

On the way Niki called me back. I was only about a minute from day care. Turns out she was on the bus and it was loud because of the storm so she missed my calls. But the bus was sitting at the same stop light as me. I could see her. Awesome, let's here it for the first ever 2008 Deaton Family Communication Breakdown!

The garage door has been reassembled and our power is back on now. Yeah for electricity!!

HA. HA. Your breakdown in communication is my mid-day chuckle. Thanks for the visual.

Now Denny you know that was not the FIRST communication breakdown of 2008. Also, the highway is a crap shoot, sometimes it takes me 30 minutes to get home on the bus and sometimes 2 hours especially in stormy weather. Thanks for being a go to dad though!

Oh yeah, that is right. You didn't answer your cell phone last week either. Forgot all about that one.

That's hilarious dude. One time during an ice storm, our power went out (this was at our old house). I panicked a little when I realized that our car was stuck in the garage. I didn't grow up with electric garage door openers, and I had completely forgotten about the little pull switch thing. Fortunately our power came back on before we had to go anywhere, but I was mentally working on all of these plans that would have gotten the car out of the garage in one way or another. All of them involved serious damage to both the car and the garage.

hahahah this is hilarious! And be thankful that she answers the phone at all....I have a family of people who have cell phones, but apparently don't feel the urge to answer them when they ring!!!
